Hawa Mahal (हवा महल “Palace of Winds” or “Palace of the Breeze”), is a palace built from red and pink sandstone and lies in Jaipur’s Pink City. The original intention of the latticed windows was to allow royal ladies to observe everyday life in the street below without being seen since they had to obey strict “parda” (face cover). It was built in 1799 in red and pink coloured sand stone, tying in with other monuments in the city that give Jaipur the name “Pink City“.

Hawa Mahal is a five story front view of the palace built by the poet king Sawai Pratap Singh for royal women to view the proceedings on the streets. It constitutes 953 small decorated windows where special attention is given to every minute part of it, which are designed in such a highly skilled manner that it looks like a honeycomb. . Its cultural and architectural heritage is a true reflection of a fusion of Hindu Rajput architecture and the Islamic Mughal architecture. Hawa Mahal was designed by Lal Chand Ustad. Hawa Mahal is now a major landmark of pink city. This excellent facade is most recognisable among all tourist places of Jaipur. Its design is semi octagonal which resembles the crown of Lord Krishna. Hawa Mahal History
The palace was built by Sawai Pratap singh, who was the grandson of Sawai Jai Singh. Sawai Pratap Singh’s devotion towards Lord Krishna is seen in the design of Hawa Mahal, where the design of the palace resembles the crownn of Lord Krishna. The main purpose of building this palace is keep the royal women in purdah from common people, while they can enjoy day to day working on streets.
Hawa Mahal is the five storey palace which is located in heart and soul of the pinkcity which was established in the year 1799 under the rule of Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh. The architecture of the building is so build that it concrete the shape of a pyramid with total of 953 windows uniquely carved in the Rajasthani pattern and designs. Lal Chand ustad, the architect of Hawa Mahal was told to build this palace in order to enable the queens and other women from royal families to enjoy the view of nature by the windows which serves the purpose of freezing winds inside the palace.
