This is a well know form of worship. The story is that Bhagwan Shri Krishna took off Indra’s right to be worshiped. Instead he worshiped Giriraj Parvat by placing 5 aarti plates in front of Goverdhan Maharaj. This started the tradition of Goverdhan ji ki Aarti.

Shree Giririraj Ji Maharaj Daan Ghati Temple is located in Govardhan Mathura UP and is dedicated to Govardhan Lord Krishna. The literal meaning of ‘Govardhana’ is ‘Gov’ which translates to ‘cows’, and ‘vardhana’ which means ‘nourishment’. Another meaning of ‘ Govardhana ‘ is to increase the senses towards the devotion of Lord Krishna.

The Giriraj Ji is a town, 22 km(approx.) from the city of Mathura on the highway to Deeg (in Rajsthan). It is also known by names of Govardhan, Shri Giriraj Ji, Govardhan Parvat etc.
In Bhagwat Geeta Krishna says he is non different from Govardhan and all devotees worship rocks in the very same manner as they worship Krishna.
